Skills Of Negotiation
Everyone negotiates at some point during almost every day, teachers and police officers, parents and friends all have to develop good skills of negotiation in order to achieve goals and maintain relationships. Clearly most negotiations are going to involve productive and honest discussions and even some compromise, and it is a good idea to have at least a basic understanding of negotiation if your career involves a high amount of this activity.
Consider a police officer, their skills of negotiation are going to involve calmer moments such the times that they have to negotiate with youthful offenders who are "getting off with a warning" about such behaviors as loitering or littering. At moments like this, the police officer is going to be negotiating with the individuals in question around such issues as respect and positive behaviors. This is a time when their skills of negotiation are going to be directed towards influence more than anything else.
There are also times when their negotiation skills are going to have to work towards manipulation more than anything else - for example, a person lashing out violently may require the police officer to convince them that they are not going to achieve their goals through such tactics. The negotiation about what is to follow the ceasing of the violent behavior will have to occur and the police officer is going to be required to use their skills to barter a peaceful conclusion.
This is only a single example of how skills of negotiation can be used. Most parents will also instantly recognize the advantages of knowing which words to use and which attitudes to apply to situations in which they are trying to get the best behaviors and results with their children. Clearly, it is annoying to think that a child must be negotiated with if they are to eat their vegetables, but someone who has well developed negotiation skills will be able to create a situation that is "win-win" for all involved.
The modern world can seem full of conflict, "road rage," chaos and selfishness, but it is much easier to navigate through such issues if you have a better understanding of the underlying causes or mindsets for all of these situations. Seeking to improve skills of negotiation will provide a good education in human logic and reasoning and can make daily life a far more productive and pleasant experience. There are now many formal training programs that can help individuals develop their skills and use them for personal and professional success.
